A Squirrel Economy

Squirrel’s are one of those critter’s that are common in rural and urban environments. The bane of home owners that find them in their attics, often considered a nuisance.

It’s that time of the year that they are again emerging from their their nest and scrounging for for food. Where they were once fat, they are now thin, searching for something that will hold them through the remaining times of scarcity.

It’s a time that many of us are experiencing. A time when we struggle to reach tomorrow.

When I saw a squirrel in my backyard I threw out some bird seed. We are all part of the cycle.

Embrace the whole and appreciate what we have.

Tracking Spending

We can now track Federal Spending online. You can search By contractor, state, location or product or service provided. This is the first time such data has been s readily available.

Now if can stop awarding contracts to more than 60,000 companies and individuals banned because they have committed crimes or deemed irresponsible we’d be ahead of the game.

The GAO identified 25 instances in which banned individuals or companies won federal contracts 2006 and 2007.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?

A question that we once asked ourselves, “where have all the flowers gone?”. We were young and idealistic. What ever happened to that idealism? Today we are engaged in two wars with no clear exit strategy.

Why the question isn’t asked, no draft. The stakeholders in this misadventure are us. The protesters of yesterday are the “Silent Majority” of today. We have become the establishment, we are the Man.

I served in the Army, and the one thing that I remember is the disconnect between civilians and troops. A all volunteer force serves to perpetuate the separation, only those that wish to serve have to. Those that do not can ignore the situation, secure in the knowledge that it will never touch their lives.

As much as I protested it, I say bring back the draft.

Transponders for Cash

Since the rise in the cost of fuel people are driving less. That’s good for the environment but bad for the government. With people buying less gasoline fuel taxes fall, which leads to a decrease in funds for transportation infrastructure.

Now one way to solve this problem would be to increase the fuel tax, this sure to happen. A long term solution suggested by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is a mileage based tax. Some states are already considering this approach.

I don’t trust this approach. It eliminates the incentive for fuel efficient cars as well as raise Orwellian privacy concerns. They are thinking outside the box, but let’s be careful before we begin tracking the traveling habits of people.

Yoko Ono

Today Yoko Ono is 76.  It was 37 years ago that Yoko and John ended a week of hosting the Mike Douglas show. Six years later John was shot by Mark Chapman.

Today Yoko remains active with the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a mobile audio and high-definition video recording and production facility on wheels that travels across the U.S. to give young people hands-on experience creating their own works of art.

Happy Birthday Yoko.
