Danish inventors produce first amateur rocket designed to send humans into space

It might not look much. In fact, it looks practically suicidal.
But two Danish inventors hope to launch the world’s first amateur-built rocket for human space travel.

The homemade rocket is the brainchild of Danish firm Copenhagen Suborbitals, headed by Kristian von Bengtson and Peter Madsen.

The team also admits that the HEAT rocket will not have much in the way of control once airborne.

‘We are currently looking into some “basic” guidance control in order to prevent gravity turn and to minimise the touchdown area,’ they say.

‘Otherwise, the system is very basic and will rely completely on the laws of aerodynamics.

‘By having a large launching tower, currently being developed, the rocket will be guided by passive rails until it have sufficient velocity to reach its apogee using only static fins.’

Being dead is no excuse…man issued parking ticket

A Seattle parking enforcement officer ticketed a man Tuesday who authorities say was likely dead hours before the ticket was issued.

About 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the parking enforcement officer marked the man’s car in a 2-hour parking zone. The woman returned a few minutes after noon and found the car hadn’t moved.

“The PEO rapped on the window twice in an attempt to wake the man,” police spokeswoman Renee Witt said in a statement. “When she was unsuccessful she concluded that the individual was simply a sound sleeper. The PEO left the ticket on the windshield and continued her patrol.”

She later learned he was dead.

Toy soldiers run afoul of school’s weapons ban

Christan Morales said her son just wanted to honor American troops when he wore a hat to school decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures.

But the school banned the hat because it ran afoul of the district’s zero-tolerance weapons policy. Why? The toy soldiers were carrying tiny guns.

“His teacher called and said it wasn’t appropriate,” Morales said.

Morales’ 8-year-old son, David, had been assigned to make a hat for the day when his second-grade class would meet their pen pals from another school. She and her son came up with an idea to add patriotic decorations to a camouflage hat.

Earlier this week, after the hat was banned, the principal at the Tiogue School in Coventry told the family that the hat would be fine if David replaced the Army men holding weapons with ones that didn’t have any, according to Superintendent Kenneth R. Di Pietro.
