Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin defended a misspelling on her Twitter account with the argument: “Shakespeare liked to coin new words too.”
The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee’s initial tweet Sunday called on peaceful Muslims to “refudiate” plans for a mosque near the World Trade Center site in New York, the Christian Science Monitor reported Tuesday.
“Refudiate” is close in spelling to “repudiate,” but Palin instead corrected the post to call for Muslims to “refute the Ground Zero mosque plan.”
Palin posted a third time after numerous Twitter users criticized her spelling.
“English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!” Palin tweeted.

On her first trip to the Gulf Coast since the BP oil spill, First Lady Michelle Obama encouraged Americans to consider vacationing on the region’s beaches that have not been directly impacted by oil.
“It is vacation time. Folks are looking for things to do with their kids, and this would be a great opportunity to do a few things — help this community, send a different message about the extent of the spill, and also think long term about how the rest of the country can help this economy and the folks down here,” Mrs. Obama said at the Panama City Welcome Center.
